Setup an 11n TP-Link AP as a Repeater

If you want to make a wireless network on your home, you have to configure Wireless Access Point as Wireless Repeater to extend the signals. Here I take TP-Link Wireless router as Example. If you become expert on it you can configure almost all Wireless router.

Information of Root Router:

1.  LAN IP: 192.168.1.254
2. SSID: TEST
3. Encryption Type: WPA2-PSK
4. Passphrase: testtplink

Preparation

  1. Since the DHCP function on the AP is disabled by default, we have to manually assign an IP address as 192.168.1.x to the computer to match the default IP address (192.168.1.254) of the Repeater.

2. Connect the computer to the AP with an Ethernet cable.

Configuration on Repeater (TP-LINK 11n AP):

1.     Log onto the Repeater’s management page. (Type 192.168.1.254 on your browser, Type admin, admin as user name and password).
2.     Click Network. Please make sure the Repeater’s IP address is in the same IP segment with the Root Router and avoid the IP conflict. In this instance, we can change the IP to “192.168.1.250”. Then click Save.

3.     Click Wireless -> Wireless Settings. Select Universal Repeater as the Operation Mode. Then click Search. (If the Root Router supports WDS, you can also select Repeater.)

4.     Find the Root Router’s SSID on the list, and then click Connect.

5.     Click Save.

6.     Click Wireless -> Wireless Security. You must make sure the Security type of your root AP. Here we take WPA2-PSK as a example. Select WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, and input the password “testtplink” in the PSK Password field. Then click Save.

After you go through all the above steps, the Repeater should get working properly with the Root Router. If the computer is still connected to the Repeater with the cable, you can check the connectivity by using Ping on that computer.

If the Ping is not successful, please check all above settings carefully, or contact TP-LINK support for help.

Restore your PC back to get IP address by DHCP.

Comments, suggestions and questions are always welcome.
